Summer Reading

I took the liberty of pampering myself on Father's Day. Last night I spent $100 on books from Amazon. My interest in constructing a doctrine of trinity based on categories of Second Temple Judaism has led me to the works of Christian and Jewish scholars of that time period, including messianic Jews (a.k.a. Hebraic Christians, or Jews who claim Jesus is the messiah while remaining Jews). I found many of the books from Rob Bell's recommended list on www.nooma.com and added a few more.

Take a glance at the list of books I bought for my summer of light reading. You can click the titles to go to Amazon's description and see if any tickle your fancy. I'd love to have a conversation partner with people reading the book simultaneously. So let me know if you took the bait.

Our Father Abraham: Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith Marvin R. Wilson; Paperback; $13.00

Understanding the Difficult Words of Jesus: New Insights from a Hebraic Perspective David Bivin; Paperback; $10.39

Jesus the Jewish Theologian Brad Young; Paperback; $12.97

Paul the Jewish Theologian: A Pharisee amoung Christians, Jews, and Gentiles Brad Young; Paperback; $10.62

Jewish Spirituality: A Brief Introduction for Christians Lawrence Kushner; Paperback; $9.97

Yeshua: A Guide to the Real Jesus and the Original Church Ron Moseley; Paperback; $12.99

Jewish New Testament Commentary: A Companion Volume to the Jewish New Testament David H. Stern; Paperback; $29.99

I'd recommend throwing James Michener's "The Source" on that list. I, too, borrowed that from Rob Bell's list. It's an amazing look through history at the persistence of the Jewish faith and its dedication to the Shemah (Hear, O Israel, our God is one). Of course, it's somewhat fictionalized by his medium of story, but one gets a window into the persistence in faith that Jesus must have lived in. One also sees how this faith has been marginalized and persecuted throughout history, and especially by the church.

Enjoy your summer of reading...I'm making my way through Anderson Cooper's book on Thoughts from the Edge. Not for the lite of stomach!! I hate war.
